PERSPECTIVES ON: Weird / Strange / Queer Feedback

Have you ever received feedback that felt truly right? Feedback that contributed to your artistic process instead of evaluating it according to an established aesthetic or curated concern?
In collaboration with Toaster, HAUT invites you to a joint seminar on feedback as a needs-based and performative strategy for sustainable performing arts.
Instead of sticking to methods of polite, conflict-averse, and inconsistent feedback, we aim to map out shared practices for feedback on the terms of art and artists themselves.
On Thursday, November 20, we host talks on needs-based and queer feedback, as well as conversations about feedback within the Danish independent performing arts scene. Among our guests are Mette Tranholm and Marie Mors, who published the book Feedback in Performing Arts Processes in 2022. We have also invited the Amsterdam-based platform In Pursuit of Otherwise Possibilities (IPOP) to present their handbook on queer feedback, which they will demonstrate in the afternoon. HAUT has ordered 30 copies of the upcoming handbook on queer feedback, which will be available for purchase at the seminar.
On Friday, November 21, dramaturg Szymon Adamczak (IPOP) will lead a workshop on feedback as an ecosystem. In the afternoon, HAUT’s artistic director Alex Blum will facilitate a workshop on care practices and care riders in artistic feedback.

Thursday – Talks on Needs-Based and Queer Feedback

Mette Tranholm and Marie Mors engage in a conversation about the book Feedback in Performing Arts Processes (2022) to contextualize the work with feedback within Danish performing arts. The talk is followed by a collective reflection.
12:30 – 13:30

Elioa Steffen from the Amsterdam-based platform In Pursuit of Otherwise Possibilities (IPOP) gives a presentation based on their new Handbook on Queer Feedback.
Elioa and IPOP will demonstrate a Queer Feedback Session with an artist who has been in a HAUT residency. Together, we will co-create a feedback space that nourishes the artist’s practice and process.
Since 2021, IPOP has been exploring needs-based and desire-driven feedback through three cycles of Queer Feedback Sessions, in which around 30 LGBTQ+ identifying artists have developed and tested feedback methods tailored to their artistic practices.
Friday – Guided Workshops on Care and Feedback

Dramaturg Szymon Adamczak from the Amsterdam-based platform In Pursuit of Otherwise Possibilities (IPOP) introduces the platform’s new Handbook on Queer Feedback as a working tool.
Szymon will invite participants to use exercises from the book to reflect on feedback as an ecosystem for both artists and institutions. Based on our own reflections, we will enter into a conversation about how to create the best conditions for artistic development work within Danish performing arts.

Drawing from Alex’s own work with consent-based exercises, participants will be invited to explore their own embodied needs for care within artistic development processes.
We will spend time together filling out the artist body_hacker / Sall Lam Toro’s template for the tool ’care rider’, which—much like a tech rider—can help clarify the artist’s needs during both residencies and productions.
