Workshop with Jules Fischer
Offered in collaboration with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts – Schools of Visual Arts and the Danish National School of Performing Arts – Continuing and Further Education.
Experience Jules Fischer’s work Repetition Compulsion at Toaster’s Performance Biennial 2026, and gain unique insight into Jules Fischer’s artistic choices, expressions, and working methods in this 3-hour workshop.
The workshop is based on seven existential questions that not only explore Jules Fischer’s individual working methods and artistic expression, but also invite you to reflect on your own creative processes:
- What methods do you use in your work?
- How do you come up with ideas for projects?
- What kinds of experiments do you conduct during your process?
- How do you generate material?
- What inspires your work?
- How do you decide which material to use from your experiments?
- What criteria do you use when selecting your material?
ABOUT JULES FISCHER
Jules Fischer (DK) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2017 and has also studied dance and choreography at the Danish National School of Performing Arts, as well as Art and Social Practice at Portland State University.
Their practice focuses on collage-like, large-scale performance works. Jules is interested in fundamental emotions such as love, grief, and loneliness, approached from an ambivalent and queer perspective. In collaboration with talents from a variety of disciplines, Jules has created works for institutions such as Glyptoteket, SMK, and Arken. In 2023, they received a three-year working grant from the Danish Arts Foundation.
JULES FISCHER AT THE BIENNALE
Repetition Compulsion explores the destructive patterns we repeat again and again and again. The work is the second part of a trilogy that revolves around the distance we carry within ourselves and the longing to feel connected. The title refers to Freud’s concept of the compulsion to repeat – the unconscious need to recreate traumatic experiences and dynamics – while also highlighting repetition as a recurring device in Jules’ practice. Participants in the workshop will include a mix of students from the art academy and professional performing artists from across disciplines who are interested in performance.

Jules Fischer’s work can be experienced at Den Frie on April 23 and 24.
