Our Other Body + Collective Manifestation

by

Boaz Barkan

Part of the performance program Acting In & Out. Performance: Our Other Body by Boaz Barkan. Collective manifestation: Art Workers for Palestine.

OUR OTHER BODY

With brutality and humor, Boaz Barkan digs through a living body to reveal a new organ – the place where our racism resides. Our Other Body is a humorous and grotesque dissection of anti-Semitism and its effect on Jewish identity. A performance lecture about how we are all both victims and oppressors at the same time, in the same body. A journey through bodies and time to connect the effects of oppression and the roots of violence.

COLLECTIVE MANIFESTATION: ART WORKERS FOR PALESTINE

In addition to the performance, there will subsequently be a collective manifestation with invited guests, who focus on the audience’s thoughts and room for action in relation to the theme of the performance.

This evening will be visited by Art Workers for Palestine. Honey Biba Beckerlee and Suada Ada Demirovic will talk about the work with art actions in solidarity with Palestine. We will talk about the silence from art institutions and the role and responsibility of art in times of crisis. The artists Banaan Al-Nasser, Asta Von Apfel & Minna Emke will invite the audience to join in kite building with bows, which symbolize the lives lost in Gaza.

The collective manifestations are organized in collaboration with Ph.D. Storm Møller Madsen from the Department of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Copenhagen.

ABOUT ACTING IN & OUT – PERFORMANCE AND ACTIVISM

Acting In & Out is an interdisciplinary program with artists from both the performing arts world and the visual arts world, who over four weeks at Husets Teater examine the framework for staging contemporary narratives.

Toaster presents four Danish groups/artists who all challenge the status quo and are concerned with socio-political issues both on the external and internal level. Nature and bodies, stretched out and up against economy, climate, gender and other power structures.

Each evening, in addition to the performance, there will be a collective manifestation with invited guests, who focus on the audience’s thoughts and room for action in relation to the theme of the performance. There will be reading aloud, embroidery, acupuncture, dragon building and choral singing in a safe space, where the audience is guided and met in a common conversation about what concerns us and where there is room for difference, doubt, hope and action!

Toaster sends a big thank you to OPE-N for the collaboration around Shout and Efter Festen, which has initiated the creation of Acting In & Out.
