Odalisque

Lina Hashim
Double-bill with 'Kultuur' by Maria Metsalu
The work Odalisque is based on the history of Western art, where especially binarity was represented and depicted, which for this performance can create discomfort, as only binary division principles are used among the audience.
ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE
In the work Odalisque, the audience travels into the artist Lina Hashim’s work as a female artist with a Muslim cultural background. At the same time, the audience is also taken into the Western, white art history, where the portrayed brown woman is often portrayed as the odalisque; a mute, seductive, female slave in a harem. Through this work, Hashim wants to redefine the story that has been told through art history and create a space for retelling the cemented ideology of the erotic harem. Hashim is interested in the representation of the odalisque figure in Western painted art, particularly during the period of Orientalism, as a masculine colonial construct, and the contemporary ideas of liberation and rescue of the same woman.
ABOUT LINA HASHIM (DK/KW)
Lina Hashim (she/her) is a visual artist and performer, born 1978 in Kuwait City, and graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2020. Throughout Hashim’s practice, she engages in a critical, nuanced dialog about and with religion, on the one hand as a woman raised in Islam and on the other hand as a critical viewer. In this way, her practice works and functions both as investigations and revelations of parts of Islam that are usually hidden from the public eye. Hashim’s practice also works from a feminist aspect, which is evident in the work Without Wind (2012), photographs of Muslim women’s hair under their headscarves. Unlawful Meetings (2014) explores the sexual double standard that exists between Muslim women and Muslim men, demonstrated through the principle of chastity. Suicide Bombers (2016) focuses on the belief that female suicide bombers in paradise are given a completely different status than their male counterparts. The work The Touch (2020) is about Hashim’s own personal life experiences, performed in three parts; a lecture- performance, a dance and an installation.

MANAGING DISCOMFORT PERFORMANCEFESTIVAL
In the spring of 2024, Toaster and Live Art Denmark present the performance festival MANAGING DISCOMFORT, which includes a number of Danish and international artists whose works have the common denominator that they all deal with discomfort, but process it with care and humor.
The festival stretches over seven weeks and each week two new performances are presented, which are staged as a double-bill at Husets Teater. This means that one ticket gives access to both performances, which are separated by a short break.
