I am Mephisto

by

Annika KompArt

Presented by Selected Works Festival in collaboration with Toaster.

I am Mephisto is a choreography-based mixed media solo performance in which a female dancer combines domestic tasks such as gardening and laundry with serious questions about the role and function of the artist in society. What does it take to be a popular artist? How do you achieve success and fame? Annika KompArt shares her personal story in a humorous manner, but at the same time addresses the paradox that it can feel like a requirement to be personal and self-exposing in order to be accepted as an artist in the performing arts industry. The performance makes reference to Klaus Mann’s “Mephisto” from 1936, and deals with the question of the price the artist must pay for fame.

I am Mephisto was originally a graduation performance from the MFA programme in Choreography at the Danish National School of Performing Arts.

Annika KompArt is a choreographer and dancer. She holds an MFA in Performing Arts from the Danish National School of Performing Arts, Copenhagen.
