Zapfenstreich – Mother Europe

by

Boys* in Sync

Double-bill with 'Demonstrating the World' by Aaron Williamson

The sight of grand military parades stirs an ambivalent discomfort in many. Boys* In Sync examines the fascination of the symbolic national display of power and embraces the ambivalence and discomfort of looking for the cracks.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

In 2021 the German chancellor Angela Merkel steps down after 16 years in office. She is being honored with a grand military ceremony called the Zapfenstreich. Boys* in Sync re-enacts the live broadcasting of the parade, asking: where is the queerness in this public display of synchronicity and power?
As performers and dancers from different European countries Boys* in Sync is treating the military movements as choreographies, examining the politics of masculinity, conformity and national symbolism. What are these choreographies missing? What strategies are needed to deconstruct them? How can one find the cracks and fill them with air, wigs and intimacy?

They work from their respective gender constructions, personal biographies & body archives.

Boys* in Sync has previously worked with institutions such as Thalia Theater Hamburg, Sophiensaele Berlin, Husets Teater Copenhagen, Tårnby Park Studio Copenhagen, Nationaltheater Mannheim, SALT Oslo, TNT Marburg, Frankfurt LAB and ATELIERFRANKFURT. They have been invited to festivals such as Det Frie Felts Festival in Copenhagen (where they were proclaimed the “highlight of the festival” by iscene.dk) and have won the audience award for ARENA Festival Erlangen 2022.

MANAGING DISCOMFORT PERFORMANCEFESTIVAL

In the spring of 2024, Toaster and Live Art Denmark present the performance festival MANAGING DISCOMFORT, which includes a number of Danish and international artists whose works have the common denominator that they all deal with discomfort, but process it with care and humor.

The festival stretches over seven weeks and each week two new performances are presented, which are staged as a double-bill at Husets Teater. This means that one ticket gives access to both performances, which are separated by a short break.
