TOASTER is a platform operating in the intersection between theatre, performance, and visual art, pushing forward new genre definitions, creating new performance formats, and stimulating new types of audience experiences. TOASTER is a unique cross-aesthetic experiment and collaboration between the theater, Husets Teater, and the exhibition venue, Den Frie Centre for Contemporary Art in Copenhagen. Each year TOASTER curates an experimental program consisting of new performance formats with theatre companies, actors, and visual artists from Denmark and abroad, contributing to an innovative development of the interdisciplinary collaboration within performing arts.
PERFORMING ARTS FOR THE FUTURE
Currently, we are all questioning our cultural consumption after the extended lockdown of our societies caused by the global pandemic, where audiences had to seek new ways of experiencing live arts. This has brought about a thorough reflection on how audiences can encounter art, and which new ideas can spring from this. Independent artists have been working with new formats, spaces, and venues to create experiments that transcend the classical structures of the institution. TOASTER wishes to create a platform for new interdisciplinary experiments, where habitual thinking and tradition are challenged in favor of new formats and audience engagement. TOASTER wishes to challenge the way audiences go to the theater and how viewers experience art exhibitions, by presenting new experimental formats that upend our expectations of what an art experience can be.
A HOME FOR ARTISTS
TOASTER strengthens live-performance art through co-productions, wherein artists have the space and freedom to challenge their own practices, and by allowing artists to step into new and expanded cross-aesthetic workspaces. This is done by offering space, professional consultation, curating, communication, and visibility for talented artists. TOASTER will revitalize live art and performance through curating a program of theater performances, exhibitions, talks, workshops, and seminars with a focus on interdisciplinary experiments and knowledge sharing.
INTERNATIONAL WORK
TOASTER aims to be an international platform and our program presents both international guest plays and co-productions with theaters in the Nordic region. All of TOASTER’s associated artists and companies have an international profile and TOASTER values this cultural diversity and its cross-aesthetic work as part of our core DNA.
